God has not chosen a political side. You have. Posts about politics are never a good idea. But I’m sorry, I was feeling this one!
I had an interesting exchange with a sister of mine yesterday that led me to write this post.
A very respected Christian news outlet had a guest on that suggested the idea that if you were “pro choice” you were not a Christian.
This made me really pause and think... “Is God “pro life” or “pro choice”? Does your standing as it pertains to this issue bring into question your Christianity?
So I took this issue to the Lord.
The first thing he showed me was in John 3. The true prerequisite to salvation was the confession and belief of the Ressurection of the Lord Jesus Christ. At no point does the Lord EVER make your political stance a prerequisite to your Christianity.
The second thing he showed me was in John 8 When the scribes and the Pharisees brought the woman who was caught in the act of adultery to Jesus, Jesus did not pick a political side. Even though she literally broke the law of Moses which clearly stated that she should be stoned to death.
So the Lord stopped me and showed me that if they already knew the law of Moses, what was the point of bringing this woman to Jesus and asking him what to do? The Lord showed me that their purpose was to tempt Jesus and lure him into a petty “gotcha” question as it pertained to the law.
But Jesus in his infinite wisdom chose not to stoop down to the petty bickering over the law. Because his assignment was not to condemn the world, but to save it through Him.
Therefore if I call myself a follower of Christ, then my assignment is not to condemn the world through the petty bickering of the law, but to save the world, through Him.
No Christian has the right to say that “if you don’t believe in the laws I believe in, then you’re not a Christian.”
There are a lot of Christians, on all sides, who agree that abortion is wrong and a sin, but disagree on choice.
Opinions on the law will always surround us. But no one has the right to judge another’s walk as a Christian based on your feelings or opinions of the law.
To make judgements on someone’s salvation based on their political beliefs misses the entire premise of what it means to be a Christian.
Our God lives at a height that is higher than opinions over the laws.
